The Truth About Qualitative Research Misconceptions

When you hear about qualitative research, what comes to mind? Some may think of "The Scream" (by Edvard Munch, 1893)— overwhelming amounts of data with an agonizing analytical process. But, I like to think of qualitative research as "Day in the Park" (Georges Seurat, 1884). In this image, Seurat used Pointillism to connect individual points [of paint], creating an interwoven masterpiece. Qualitative research is similar in that, through technique (i.e., research design), we connect the dots [of data] to better understand people's experiences, perceptions, and insights. One narrative, interview, or focus group has its own characteristics, yet collectively they share in making a masterpiece of lived experiences that define our research questions.
